Homeopathy
Homeopathy was created by Samuel Hahnemann who described the medicine with the Latin premise: Similia Similibus Curentur - “let likes cure likes”.
The basis of homeopathic philosophy, the Law of Similar states: A pharmacologically active substance administered to a person in good health triggers a series of symptoms. When these same symptoms appear in a sick person they can be cured by administering the same substance in a micro dose. A common example of this is Ipecac. When taken in a large doses Ipecac causes vomiting; when taken in a very small dose it is one of the best remedies for nausea and vomiting.
Symptoms are the body's attempt to balance itself. During early life, growth and development stresses are encountered; all organisms respond with strategies that enable survival. In health homeostasis - continual dynamic balance - is maintained through various mechanisms. When stress or trauma exceeds the organism's ability to normalize the vital force, internal defense mechanism, is unable to neutralize the stress. A variety of chronic symptoms may result such as: recurrent infections, fatigue, digestive disturbances, headaches, chronic allergies, depression, anxiety, etc. The expression of symptoms is a purposeful response to stressful stimuli and the key to finding an effective homeopathic prescription.
Homeopathy attempts to stimulate the body to heal itself based on the totality of the symptoms present: physical, emotional, and metal. Conventionally, health is seen simply as the absence of disease. More accurately, a healthy person is free from suffering on all levels and thriving in life.
Three levels of homeopathic therapy include:
1) Constitutional Homeopathy
Mental, emotional and physical symptoms are each considered important in prescribing one correct single remedy for an individual though suffering may predominate on one of these levels. Hence, homeopathy is a holistic approach to health. When a person’s story of suffering is articulated, perhaps through a timeline physical or notation of emotional and mental reactions to stressful obstacles, the practitioner is able to recognize patterns which match the person with a single homeopathic remedy (mineral, plant or animal) which, if correctly prescribed, will begin to unravel the knots tied during life.
2) Acute Homeopathy
Homeopathy is also useful in treating acute health issues in which the symptoms will eventually resolve themselves such as colds, coughs, sports injuries, etc. Treatment of conditions that arise in pregnancy and infancy are well suited to homeopathy as these remedies are safe without harmful side effects.
3) First Aid
Correctly chosen first aid remedies can act quickly and safely. Homeopathic remedies can effectively treat infant teething, bruises, minor burns, bee stings and spider bites, skin reactions such as sunburn, diaper rash and poison oak.
